Born fromreverence, not revenue.
Nihongozu was founded by practitioners who believe Japanese deserves more than gamified shortcuts.
It started with a broken textbook.
In 2023, our founder Yuki Tanaka — a calligrapher, linguist, and former Duolingo engineer — watched a student cry over a grammar worksheet. Not from difficulty. From boredom.
She realized the entire industry had optimized for engagement metrics while ignoring the thing that actually makes language stick: emotional connection to culture.
So she built something different. A curriculum where every lesson opens with a film clip, a street recording, a poem. Where kanji is taught as choreography, not memorization. Where AI conversations adapt to your hesitation patterns, not just your vocabulary.
Nihongozu is the result: a learning experience built for people who respect Japanese enough to learn it properly.
Four principles,
one practice.
The Way
Japanese is not a subject to study. It is a path to walk. We guide that walk with intention.
Heart
Every student carries a different reason. We listen before we teach.
Craft
We obsess over the details — pitch accent, stroke rhythm, the silence between words.
Respect
Language and culture are inseparable. We honor both.
Small team. Obsessive craft.
