JLPT Exam
What is the JLPT and why should I take it?
The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is the world's most recognized standardized exam for Japanese proficiency, administered by the Japan Foundation. It has 5 levels (N5 to N1) and is required for Japanese university admissions, employment at Japanese companies, visa applications, and as a benchmark for personal learning goals. Over 1 million people take it annually across 80+ countries.
Which JLPT level should I aim for?
It depends on your goals. N5-N4 for basic travel and interest, N3 for entry-level opportunities, N2 for most jobs in Japan (the most sought-after level), and N1 for senior roles, translation, and academia. At Nihongozu, we offer a free placement test to help you determine the right target level based on your current proficiency and career objectives.
How often is the JLPT conducted?
The JLPT is conducted twice a year — on the first Sunday of July and the first Sunday of December. In India, exams are held in major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and others. Registration typically opens 3-4 months before each exam date.
What are the passing marks for JLPT?
For N5 and N4: 19/60 per section and 80-90/180 overall. For N3, N2, N1: 19/60 per section and 95-100/180 overall. You must pass ALL sections simultaneously — failing even one section means you fail the entire exam, regardless of your overall score. Sectional scores cannot be carried forward.
Can I skip JLPT levels and take N2 directly?
Yes, there are no prerequisites — you can register for any level without having passed lower levels. However, jumping to N2 without N3 foundation is extremely difficult due to the steep jump in kanji (1,000+), vocabulary (6,000+), and grammar complexity. We recommend a placement test to find the right starting point.

Additionally, our curriculum is fully aligned with JLPT, so you'll be prepared to earn the internationally recognized JLPT certificate by appearing for the exam. What is the JLPT registration fee?
JLPT registration fees are set by the Japan Foundation: N5/N4/N3: ₹1,947, N2/N1: ₹1,416. These are separate from Nihongozu course fees and must be paid directly during JLPT registration. We assist all students with the JLPT registration process.
Online Classes
Does Nihongozu offer online Japanese classes?
Yes. We offer live online classes for all JLPT levels (N5-N1). Online sessions are conducted via Zoom/Google Meet with real-time interaction, screen sharing, digital whiteboard, and recorded sessions for revision. The curriculum, faculty, and quality are identical to our offline batches.
How are online classes different from offline?
The content and faculty are identical. Online classes offer the added benefit of session recordings (available for 30 days), convenience of learning from home, and accessibility from anywhere in India. Some students prefer the in-person energy of offline classes, while others value the flexibility of online learning.
What do I need for online classes?
A stable internet connection (10 Mbps+ recommended), a laptop/desktop with webcam and microphone, headphones for listening practice, and a quiet space. We use Zoom or Google Meet — both free to join. Our tech team provides a test session before your first class to ensure everything works smoothly.
Are online students eligible for JLPT preparation?
Absolutely. Our online JLPT preparation is just as rigorous as offline. Online students receive the same study materials, mock tests, practice exams, and JLPT registration guidance. Our online students achieve the same 98% JLPT pass rate as our offline students.
Visa & Working in Japan
Can learning Japanese help me get a Japan visa?
Yes. Japanese proficiency strengthens visa applications, especially for the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme, Working Holiday Visa, and the Highly Skilled Professional visa (which awards points for JLPT certification). N2 or N1 certification is particularly valuable for work visa applications.
What job opportunities are available in Japan with Japanese?
Japanese proficiency opens doors to: IT/Engineering roles at Japanese companies, Translation/Interpretation, Tourism/Hospitality, Teaching English in Japan (with Japanese skills), Manufacturing/ Automotive, Finance/Banking, and many more. N2 is the minimum for most roles; N1 is preferred for senior positions.
Does Nihongozu help with Japan job placement?
While we don't directly place students in Japan jobs, our JLPT preparation, cultural training, and business Japanese modules equip you with the skills Japanese employers seek. We also share job listings, connect you with alumni working in Japan, and provide guidance on Japanese job application etiquette.
What is the JET Programme?
The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme recruits international graduates to work in Japanese local governments and schools as Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) or Coordinators for International Relations (CIRs). JLPT N2 or higher is a significant advantage. Nihongozu prepares students for JET interviews and the Japanese proficiency required.
Corporate Training
Does Nihongozu offer corporate Japanese training?
Yes. We offer customized Japanese language training for corporate teams, IT companies, automotive firms, and organizations working with Japanese clients or partners. Programs are tailored to your industry, schedule, and specific business communication needs.
What does corporate training include?
