How to Check Your JLPT Result 2026

Everything you need to know about checking your JLPT result, understanding pass marks for each level (N5–N1), what to do if you pass or fail, and complete retake information. Your guide to navigating JLPT results with confidence.

Step-by-Step

How to Check Your JLPT Result

Follow these simple steps to access your JLPT score report online. Results are available approximately 2-3 months after the exam date.

01

Visit the Official JLPT Website

Go to www.jlpt.jp or the Japan Foundation's results portal. Look for the 'Score Inquiry' or 'Result Check' section. Results are published online only — no postal delivery.

02

Enter Your Registration Details

Use your JLPT registration number (found on your admit card) and the password you created during registration. If you forget your password, use the 'Forgot Password' link on the portal.

03

View and Download Your Score Report

Your score report will show sectional scores (Vocabulary/Grammar, Reading, Listening) and your overall score. Download and save a copy for your records. Print multiple copies for future applications.

04

Receive Your Official Certificate

If you pass, an official JLPT certificate will be mailed to your registered address within 2-3 months after results. Keep it safe — it does not expire and is your official proof of proficiency.

Important: Result Availability

JLPT results are typically released 2-3 months after the exam. For the July exam, results are available by late September. For the December exam, results appear by late February. Bookmark the official JLPT website and check regularly.

Pass Marks

JLPT Pass Marks Per Level

Each JLPT level has specific passing criteria. You must meet BOTH the sectional minimum AND the overall total to pass. Failing even one section means you fail the entire exam.

N5Pass

Section Minimum

19/60 (32%)

Overall Total

80/180 (44%)

Details

You need at least 19 points in each of the 3 sections AND a combined total of 80 out of 180.

N4Pass

Section Minimum

19/60 (32%)

Overall Total

90/180 (50%)

Details

Minimum 19 per section and 90 total. N4 is commonly required for basic work in Japan.

N3Pass

Section Minimum

19/60 (32%)

Overall Total

95/180 (53%)

Details

Gateway level. Requires 19 per section and 95 overall. Opens doors to many entry-level Japan opportunities.

N2Pass

Section Minimum

19/60 (32%)

Overall Total

90/180 (50%)

Details

The most sought-after level. Minimum 19 per section and 90 total. Required by most Japanese employers.

N1Pass

Section Minimum

19/60 (32%)

Overall Total

100/180 (56%)

Details

The highest level. Requires 19 per section and 100 total. Preferred for senior roles and academia.

Key Rule: Sectional Pass Required

If your overall score exceeds the passing threshold but you score below the sectional minimum in even one section, you fail the entire exam. For example, if you score 60/60 in Vocabulary and Reading but only 18/60 in Listening at N5 level (minimum is 19), you will not pass — despite having a high overall score.

Congratulations

What to Do If You Pass

Celebrate Your Achievement

Passing JLPT is a major milestone. Share your result with Nihongozu and let us congratulate you on your hard work paying off.

Collect Your Certificate

Your official JLPT certificate will arrive by mail within 2-3 months. Store it safely — it is valid indefinitely and required for university admissions, job applications, and visa processing.

Consider advancing to the next JLPT level. Many students move from N3 to N2, or N2 to N1, to strengthen their career prospects and academic opportunities in Japan.

Apply for Opportunities

Use your JLPT certificate to apply for Japanese university admissions, jobs at Japanese companies, the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme, or the Highly Skilled Professional visa.

Don't Worry

What to Do If You Don't Pass

Failing JLPT is not the end — it's a learning opportunity. Here's how to bounce back stronger and pass on your next attempt.

You Can Retake Immediately

There is no waiting period. You can register for the next JLPT exam (July or December) right away. Many students pass on their second attempt after targeted preparation.

Analyze Your Weak Areas

Review your sectional scores to identify which section pulled you down. Was it Vocabulary, Grammar/Reading, or Listening? Focus your next preparation on the weakest section.

Strengthen Your Strategy

At Nihongozu, we offer post-result analysis sessions. Our faculty reviews your score report and creates a personalized improvement plan for your next attempt.

Don't Give Up

JLPT is designed to be challenging. Many successful Japanese learners failed before passing. Consistent study and the right guidance will get you across the finish line.

Retake Information

JLPT Retake Policy & FAQ

How many times can I retake the JLPT?
There is no limit on retakes. You can take the JLPT as many times as you want — in every July and December session. Each attempt is independent; previous scores do not carry forward.
Is there a waiting period after failing?
No. You can register for the very next JLPT session (3-6 months later). There is no mandatory waiting period or cooling-off period between attempts.
Do I need to retake all sections if I fail?
Yes. You must retake the entire exam — all 3 sections. Partial passes or sectional scores cannot be carried over. You must pass all sections in a single sitting.
How do I improve my score on retake?
Focus on your weakest section. Use JLPT-specific prep materials, take mock tests under timed conditions, and consider joining Nihongozu's targeted retake preparation course for personalized guidance.
